Hello..1984 c4...code 44 popped up..gas milaege down to 13ish...o2 sensor fuel pump fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter are all under 1 year old..The check engine light comes only on once in a while..Sometimes after 30 minutes of driving..sometimes light stays on til car is shut off other times goes out n comes back on while driving..idle seems normal at 600 rpms..checked for vacuum leaks but none found..Waited til tank was almost empty then filled tank with fresh gas and injector cleaner but still code 44 popping up...any ideas? What are the chances of a 02 sensor going bad within 10,000 miles? Any help really appreciated..
THANKS
With gas mileage that low it sure sounds like it's not reading the O2 sensor, or a faulty O2 sensor. Do you have after market headers? What brand did you replace it with? If you have a scanner that could tell you what your computer is seeing for the O2.
When I first replaced my sensor I went with Bosch sensors that went out one after the other. After warrantying them both and them failing again, I replaced them with OE AC Delco sensors and it has worked fine ever since. I know this is a small sample size, but something to think about.
Code 44 is a lean condition, the O2 is the messenger. Don't shoot the messenger. Check for vacuum leak first including along cover to base intake gasket. Also be sure injector connectors are properly seated an wires are not pinched.. If fuel filter has not been in a while might be worth changing.. If everything checks ok then try O2 sensor.
Thanx for the input..my 02 sensor is bosch...Time to change..thanx
How old is the sensor? If it is 5 years, conventional wisdom says to change it. If it is a year old, I'd scan it or you might still have the same issue.
Sometimes the O2 sensors go bad if the engine is too rich. I had this, the spark plugs were covered in black soot but I had a code 44. I replaced the O2 sensor and the code went away but the engine was still rich. I hooked up the trusty WinALDL and found the problem. The throttle position sensor was bad; with the throttle closed it was showing 39% open so the computer just tipped more fuel in. The car now runs like a new pin.
