I have an A4 but my desire for a six speed is growing, dangerously so, soon may change from desire to lust. I must listen to the Voice of Reason, stop thinking about a 6-speed LT4 'vert and be content with my A4 LT1 'vert- it is a very nice Corvette and I should be ashamed of myself for letting my eyes wander from her.
Yeah sixspeeds are fun but noone shifts faster than an auto trans, and a converter that lauches at the right RPM is more consistant than you would be. So dont knock the auto too quicky. But Lone's right you cant have too many.
It all depends on what you want, what you enjoy. There are other forms of racing besides straight line stuff and while no one should/could argue that an auto is better for drag racing, a 6 speed is better suited and better overall for autox and road racing. Some people like to shift gears, others dont. I say get what you want and enjoy.
Just making the switch myself I'll give you my thoughts...
I miss the auto on some days, when I've got a drink in one hand trying to shift while on the cell can become a nightmare. Sometimes when I'm just out driving to enjoy the road... having to shift takes away from that... but since my car isn't a daily driver any more (4 or 5 days a week instead of 7) the 6spd is a a blast when I want to take the car out and have fun. As far as the power of the LT4 vs my 95 with the A4... no comparision... the LT4 would of tore my 95 a new one... and my 95 had the performance rear in it.
And since I wanted to mod the car for more power, the 6spd was a better choice to start off with having the D44 in the rear.
I love the six speed, it's faster and in my case, more consistent.
Also, but only in my case, I can shift the six speed faster than the auto(trust me, I mean it). Somethings up with my auto trans, it's either too cold or too warm and has shifting problems in those cases.
... no comparision... the LT4 would of tore my 95 a new one... and my 95 had the performance rear in it.
And my A4 has the tall 2.59's.. so, that's what I'm talkin' 'bout! The Power of the LT4! Ah... yes, that mythical LT4 power is like a siren song in the distance, beckoning to me, seducing me... :yesnod:
Lone One
What ever you want, don't make the conversion to a 6 speed unless you are joined at the hip to your current car. The conversion will cost in the range of $5,000 and might add $1,000 to the value of your car.
Find a newer car with a 6 speed, add the money you saved by not converting, to the value of your old car, and ride off into the sunset never wondering if everything was done right.
Go find one to test drive first before you make this jump.
