I recently purchased a 1989 corvette and noticed that when the engine is pushed rather hard (75% throttle) the engine will knock. It knocks loudly! My mom came to visit and took it for a drive and she floored the car (much to my dismay) and it knocked a little but was quiet at WOT. What should I be looking at? Also, the timing plate on the engine is illegible due to what looks like is a previous water pump leak... I can only make out a '12' at the top of the plate. How is that thing supposed to be labeled?
Take some Scotch Brite (or maybe even some 220grit paper) to that timing plate and it will clean right up. You may need to hit the rim of the damper too to see the timing mark.
Open the EST connector to the right of the base booster and clip the light onto #1 wire. If it still has the "frisbee" on the front of the water pump pulley, toss it so you can access the timing plate.
If you can actually hear knock or ping you may have a defective (or unplugged) knock sensor or ESC module.
