Default Timing chain set

"92 LT1 base. ZF 6 speed.
Time to replace my timing chain set. Wifes' occasional driver. Any recommendations? Will a double row fit or, does it require a different cover?
Thoughts?
TIA, Dave

Per my research (and the one that I purchased) only a single row will fit inside the oem cover. If you are wanting a true roller set, look at Summit Racing. There is a regular duty roller set and an "extreme duty" set. There is also the factory style link chains available. You are somewhat limited due to the design of the engine with the Optispark distributor.

I do not know if there ever was an redesigned cover that allowed a double row chain to be used. Maybe others here know.

While you are in there (are you doing the work yourself ? ) It might be time to upgrade the Optispark to a vented design and also replace the water pump as long as the front of the engine is all tore apart anyway.

There are specific tool sets that were designed to work on the front of LT1's. HOWEVER, with some careful substitution, you can work on them without the tools. If you are going to do the work yourself, I recommend doing some searching and reading here on the forum so that you get an idea of what you are getting into.

Good luck.

There are limited choices with GEN2. Cloyes makes the extreme duty for GM. There's no double roller option unless you're going to electric water pump.

Here is what Summit has:

https://www.summitracing.com/oh/sear...4%2B4294899606

This is the one I bought

This is the extreme duty one

As you can see, for a "wife's occasional driver" especially if she is not using it as a "hot rod", etc., it is more cost effective to go with stock, especially if you are paying someone to do the work for you.

Default Timing chain

Thanks dr:
Good info. I replaced it about 12 years ago during the Opti crap change out. I believe it was an MSD vented. Neat thing is the two halfs are sealed with epoxy. I had the front apart this time to replace the water pump seal. And the Opit, seal, and front main seal. She only put about 15k on since the change. I must have used a cheapo kit 'cause there was a lot of slop. I do all my own wrenching. Don't like anyone touching my stuff.

Thanks, Dave.

another Dave here also, and Dave doesnt like anyone else wrenching on his corvette (ie. Had an akron shop put a cam in my car in , ‘01, then it came back with a timing cover oil leak which it didnt have before. So no-one else wrenches on it anymore).
