I dont know if my car is running DINO or Synthetic oil. How do I tell?
The car has around 20K mi on it so if it is running DINO oil would it be advised to change it to synthetic or just leave it where it is? Im worried about leaks that the synthetic might find if I change.
Thanks guys
I switched mine at 98k on my'86. no problem. I think the leak fear stems from the very first synthetic blends. I have switched to synthetic on all my vehicles, including a 25 year old 455 ci Olds engine with no problems at all, only benifits. Cars run cooler and use less oil than before. I have used Castol and Mobil 1.
Barrier :)
If you just bought the car (and thats why you don't know) change the oil regardless and start using the oil/filter you like (Mobil 1 5w-30 is recommended). Also, whats up with your name? Isn't that blasphemous here?
you should switch over to Mobil 1, it doesnt sludge up and can take more abuse, plus since it seems like your car sits alot it would be better all around.
I had dino originally in my 86 when i bought it, switched over to mobil 1, no more sludge at ALL, cleaned out everything in the oil pan built up over the years. Did develop a slight oil leak though, but nothing major.

Re: OIL QUESTION (oldace84)
I put in Mobil1 10-30, and developed some new leaks. My oil pressure is pretty high, always has been. It seems I'm leaking past the valve seals, and a teensy bit on the intake (haven't gotten around to retorquing it) and it's even seeping out the drain plug.
