id run hylomar as per the specs which is to mate, seperate gor 15 min, then assemble.

Suggest using a straight edge across the deck to insure that the deck is not low @ the problem area.
If the deck is low problems will persist.
If the deck is ok suggest exchange heads.
If concerns with coolant leaks after assembly suggest a bottle of Bars leak copper.

It is....1997, L31 Vortec. I can look at the number when I get home. I'm at work, at the moment.

THey are known to crack. Get a cheap GM crate in ther and call it a day. THey are under 2k cant go wrong.

The truck is probably only worth $1500. Not my call anyway. Owner won't spend $2k on it.

Block is junk. Grab another L31 from the junkyard and swap it in.
I've gotten to the point where it's just not cost effective to fix stock SBC blocks anymore. By the time I hot tank it, sonic check it, align the mains, deck it, bore it, I'm almost at the cost of a aftermarket block that's already prepped.
