Basically as long as you keep enough fuel pressure and vacuum for the map to read right and the ecm to be able to adjust the BLM and INTs to the middle ish area it should be fine. Not ideal but it will be better off than an equivalent TPI with the same mods. I've seen it done myself.

Or if you want to go crazy there is the EBL flash route then your options are endless. If you're planning on building it, you gotta pay to play as it isn't cheap to do right.
Nothing done right will be cheap AND easy. He does say he wants it to cut curves and sound good so maybe money and time will be better spent on suspension mods and a loud exhaust instead of having to buy the parts and jiggle around with the fuel pressure to keep it running somewhat ok?

@84 4+3 I saw that before in another forum and I'll definitely keep it in mind. Maybe I'll get lucky and get a good one on the first order.

@aklim The only other performance mods I want before I go to college next fall are an intake and chip. I know the Renegade intake has had its own set of problems, but I think with enough research I'll know what I'm getting myself into. You mention suspension mods and I know the 84 has great handling. What suspension mods could I do that wouldn't break the bank but would actually make a difference? The car is a Z51 and I just replaced the shocks with the Z51 specific Bilsteins this past August if that makes a difference.

If you're smart about what you select it won't be any worse than stock. I'm not saying hog wild but the renegade and headers are well within what that ECM is capable of in stock form. Been there done that and have the T-shirt. Wet flow is very forgiving.

Don't waste your time on a chip. Many have reported running slower afterwards. Doing just the intake and making sure your fuel pressure is in spec (13ish psi) will more than make it run fine. The headers and intake aren't far enough outside of the parameters to make a difference. I ran cam and intake on a stock ecm and then did the same on an ebl flash with no appreciable difference in drivability or fuel economy. I did however tweak the EBL flash tune from stock and picked up ever so slightly more pull, mainly from timing. BLMs never strayed much in either direction with either ecm.

@84 4+3 even the custom tuned ones? I know the ones on Eckler's are garbage but I would be getting one tuned specifically for my application.

Like a dyno tuning chip? Does anyone do this for an 84?

If they do I was not aware.

I honestly wasn't aware anyone could do this. The 84 runs some step child hex setup that is different than even 85s. The ecm doesn't have much of any resolution. I was under the impression that the only one available was the one through DCS. Who knows.

@aklim @84 4+3 I thought there were companies that did mail order tunes if that's what you mean. I'm guessing it could be tuned live on a dyno but idk. I have looked at this one from EM Racing and they say they can tune it for CFI. I've also been recommended to a few other companies that I have yet to check out.

Mail order is just guessing a tune.

@aklim I know it is and that it may take multiple tries but it would be better than nothing. There are a few CFI specific forums where people tune their own chips and such. I'm not ready to buy one yet so I'll do more research when the time comes. I may not even end up buying one so I'm not too concerned right now.

@corvettenorway how do I add more fuel pressure without messing with the ecm? Is there a regulator somewhere that I don't know about?

The rear throttlebody with the return line has a regulator under the tower that can be adjusted. You punch out the plug and have access but I have yet to find a tool that actually fits, I just pulled my tower on and off until I got the pressure where I wanted it.

Check what pressure you are running at first. IMO, if you are at 13 or so I wouldn't mess with it. Mine happened to run well at 12.8. Here is a link explaining how to get to the regulator/process kind of.

@corvettenorway @84 4+3 Thank you guys for the help. The only problem I'm having now is with my new mini starter which I'm about to make a post on.

I don't know if this is allowed or not but I got my header install done. Here's a video on it. All the info in the video is in this thread I believe but there are a few revs at the end.

Nice, I also have and love those mufflers. Hard to tell from the video but it definetly seems to have a more throaty sound no?
