Default automatic trans, cammed engine and reverse

Hi..a friend was in to my store today. We got to talking about the engine Jim Barth is building for me. This friend says the car will have issues backing up with a stock converter. As my 1989 is now, 700R4, stock converter, 3.07 rear end you pull it into reverse and all is normal. He thinks I will have problems with the engine wanting to die with my foot on the brake at idle in reverse. I've never heard anyone say this could be a problem before. True story...partially true?

Thanks guys.

Maybe if the idle is low but with a decent tune it shouldn't be a problem. I run a stock stall on a 383 in my truck (1800 stall) and only when its cold does it even think about it. I have a hard time keeping it stopped at a light, it is bouncing off the stall and fights the brakes the whole time. Cam is a 224/230 so not wild by any means either though.

It will depend on the tune. Tuning can compensate for some idle issues.

That's similar to a hot cam. A decent tune and you'll be fine. You should do a stall but I think you'll be fine.

Jim is one of the best builders around. Why would it make any difference backing up or going forward. It’s the same converter between the engine and transmission.

My 89 with a 383 and a 218/226/112 Erson cam had no problems backing up without stalling with the stock converter.. I'm running an even bigger cam now with no problem... Your friend is wrong...WW
