hello everyone, i just got my 84 a couple of weeks ago. ive been lurking on the forum reading a lot.. but now its time to ask a question
the previous owner didnt have it very long, but is very knowledgeable on vettes. the problem is, he told me if you drive it 40 miles or so, it will start running very rough, he said he would pull over and disconnect the throttle body on the driver side for a couple of minutes, reconnect it, and it would be good for another 40 miles or so. i havent driven it that far yet, so i dont know for sure. he is a long time friend of mine, so i do believe what he is saying, any ideas what this could be?
Disconnect what on the throttle body? The throttle position sensor? The idle air control? The fuel injector? The throttle linkage? A picture of this trick might help us figure this out.
Since you are a new owner of an '84, you definitely need a copy of the FSM (Factory Shop/Service Manual)!
sorry i didnt think that far ahead i will get a pic tomorrow but its a plug on the side of the throttle body with three wires that faces the drivers fender. im assuming the tps. but im not really that knowledgeable on throttle bodies
I purchased a 84 from a dealer who said it ran just great. It would drive for about 30 to 40 minutes and basically quit or run very rough. Let it sit and it would start up and run again fine for about the same amount of time. It ended up being the ECM that was causing the problem. I am not saying this is your problem but it sounds similar.
Google adjusting the TPS on the 84 and try that first. You will need a digital volt meter for this job. Definitely get you a factory service manual for your 84 it will pay for itself quickly.
