Default 96 rear end progression pics

Almost finished putting my rear end back in my 96. The rear end was destroyed. Totally locked up. Lots of shiny metal and metal shavings I don't know if anything was salvageable. I brought it to Mike Dyer (tracdogg) in Dallas. New 3.73 gears and billet steel cap to replace the weak aluminum factory cap.

Why the single 'after-market' left cap?

Under power the left side tries to push away from the pinion. The right side pushes forward against the housing so the aluminum cap is fine. But the left aluminum cap takes alot of abuse holding the rearward thrust and is the weakest link. Send Mike Dyer a message on Facebook and he will explain in detail way better than me. Very good guy to deal with. Highly recommend him

I don't do 'FACEBOOK' and I understand what you mention but I don't believe I've ever seen the modification promoted on the later D44-HD builds. The earlier C3 '80 - '82 yes but not the later. C4. I believe he's also here on the CF as 'Tracdogg'. I would think it an expensive modification and unless there's 'extreme power' could maybe considered excessive! Was the cap considered to have been a failed component on the original?

I don't know if the cap was at fault or not. Someone had built this rearend before I bought the car and I'm hard on it at times. My motor isn't anything extreme. It made 460 rwhp and 437 rwtq running through a zf6 speed. He said it was set-up wrong. I remember the ring gear teeth were like razor blades. It was really bad. Worst he and I had ever seen.

I don't know if you heard, but BMW in Plano cancelled the show. Last one was December 2018.

No , I didn't know that. The last time I was there was when I saw you a couple of years ago. What's the big show now to go to?
