Tearing things apart today to install short shifter. Having trouble getting the stock shift **** off. Is this threaded hole in the retainer used in some way? Tried clamping vise grips on the retainer but can't get it to budge. Need suggestions. TIA.
I can’t really see a lip that I can pry on. I’m thinking of threading a bolt into the hole and using a slide hammer. The threads go all the way in. Thoughts?

Looks like someone epoxied it on but I don't see haw the button works. There's supposed to be a c clip down there under the epoxy. Maybe try digging out the epoxy and see if the clip is there or not.
What year? My 96 only has the wedge. It is a soft metal and think threads that small would just strip out if you put any real force on them. I used a small set of vice grips and wiggled it bit by bit until I got enough out to get a solid grip on it and yank it out.
Damn guys, there is no c-clip on the ZF ****. It is just the wedge that locks it in place after screwing the **** down. You can see from his console/radio it is a 94-96.
I got the wedge out. The hole someone drilled and tapped into the wedge was 8-32, full depth into the wedge. I drilled out the slide hammer shaft and threaded it 8-32. Them I cut off the threaded portion of a long 8-32 bolt and threaded it into the slide hammer shaft and the wedge. All it took was a couple of light raps with the hammer and it popped right out. I think GM should have done it this way to begin with. All the load is right in line with the wedge, and you don’t have to worry about damaging the leather **** by prying against it.
Thanks to all who offered suggestions! Next step is removing the shifter assembly...
