More than likely it's the three delrin rollers in the gear box section of the light motors. You can order them or pick them up at a local parts store. Fairly straight forward repair. There are a few DIY threads on here for the repair.

Yes and no to your questions. There is a module that tells it to stop (assuming it is similar to my 91. There are substitutions for it (Pontiac Fiero, IIRC) but I don't think that is what is wrong. I would suspect that it moves till it hits a stop. Problem is, as long as it can move, it hasn't hit a stop. When it does hit a stop, there is an amp surge and that module decides it is time to stop the current. Probably the 3 pellets there. I'd get a new set of pellets and also the bronze gear to replace the plastic gear since you are there already. See below link.

4 reasons to do the gear.

1. Your plastic one is old and you are going to have to get to the gear to clean out the debris from the broken pellets
2. Bronze is more durable than plastic.
3. You are not sure what spec the new ones are made to
4. C4 stuff is getting obsolete. When you need it again, who knows whether it is available even if it is a lower spec one.
