Default ANOTHER transmission fluid thread

Yes, I am well aware of the search function.
Yes, opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one.
Yes, there is documentation on ZFdoc's website.

I have a question: (1989 black tag ZF6)

Drag racers/road racers/gofast guys: What fluid do you fill the ZF6 with to help it live under a great amount of stress?

Amsoil/pensoil/RP synchromesh?
5w30 motor oil?
10w60 BMW oil?
Redline shockproof?

Real world experience replies only, please...

I might be 'more concerned' about what has been there for the past 30 years!!!!! Maintained how in those 30 years!! Miles!! I'm quite sure there's documented failures with everything you've mentioned!

Who said anything about the last 30yrs?

Thanks for your reply, it helped point me in a direction to make an informed decision as to what fluid to fill my gearbox with.

I think the past30 years is a btter indicator than , say, the last 3 years. WV knows his stuff. What someone ran for years , as you ask, is a great question.

So, what fluid would you recommend, as someone who has real world experience with high stress loads on a ZF6? That was the question.

I changed from the stock GM fluid to Amsoil and there was a noticeable difference in much smoother shifting. I'd recommend it.

Are you taking a garage queen and making a track ***** out of it? I think most of us are asking you the same thing in different ways. Whats in it now, and has it failed before? There aren't any magic potions to make these transmissions more bullet-proof than they already are.

Nope.

The trans is dry, previous failures/history irrelevant.

Thanks.

In a bone stock car, driven like most C4's, any fluid would likely keep the trans alive for a small amount of mileage per year at 250hp... that info is published everywhere.

Let's narrow it down... if you are making in excess of 500hp/500tq what fluid are you running in your ZF6?

Really looking for answers from the drag racing/road racing guys, not the guys asking for the history of a car or trans that doesnt matter in this discussion.
