Default MAF Senser Question

I had a problem the other day with my 87 automatic. I was going out to a car club meeting and I hadn't used the Vette in about 2 weeks. Only went about 200 yards when there was a car parked in my lane so I had to cross the center line to get around. Punched the gas, but Vette stumbled and coughed before it got going. "Check Engine" (Code 34) came on but Vette kept running and cleared up. As I was driving, I noticed that the transmission wouldn't go into overdrive at around 52-55mph like it usually does. It jerked forward when I gave it gas, and when I let off, it acted like I had just downshifted. Got to where I was going and let it sit for about an hour. Started up, "check engine" light went off, and it drove fine. My question is: why does the MAF sensor have anything to do with the transmission not going into overdrive......and do you think this was just a one time experience because I tried to get going when the engine was still cold? Thanks for any response.

My guess is the MAF was shooting off errant values so the ECM defaulted to open loop (limp home mode).

Clear your codes (unbolt the battery and let the car sit for about 15 minutes then reconnect) and see if it comes back. I'd also pull off the connector and put some dielectric grease into the plug to prevent moisture from getting in there and possibly corroding the terminals and preventing good electrical transfer.

From there, you could try changing the MAF burnoff relay to make sure you are getting good voltage to the MAF when you turn off the car. The relay will heat up the wire and clear off any crud that gets on the wire.

I wouldn't even bother it unless it comes back. When I first got my 85 it would do stuff like that (I suspect because the previous owner didn't drive it much). I would just kill the engine and restart (reboot) and it would be fine. Clearing codes isn't really necessary unless you want to get rid of all the garbage that can be stored in there. It will clear it'self in something like 40 drive cycles. I don't bother to clear mine....... I know which ones are current, I clear them when I work on the car ( and I'm always tinkering so I have to reset my clock and radio stations often)  :seeya
