You can do the same thing a shop would charge you for by picking up the kit. You can get it @ MAD or Ecklers...or possibly the local parts house. It consists of a can of cleaner, hose and pressure guage attachment. It hooks on to the schrader valve on the fuel rail. You need to disable the FP so the engine runs off the contents of the can only. Costs about $100. After you buy the kit, from then on, all you need to buy is the can of cleaner.
If you elect to use tank cleaners, know what your getting. Solvent based additive cleaners have the potential to cause problems. They can be a little too aggressive around the solenoids. Detergent based additives are more gentle, arguably, less aggressive/effective. I'm told the RedLine is the detergent variety but not sure about others.
I would research and make sure whatever you use is compatible with your set up. Pretty sure anything from MAD or Ecklers should be good. Ohter places, not so sure. Don't mean to be an alarmist but my car ran like crap after I did a tank additive injector cleaner. Finally straightened out. Witchcraft.
I hope this is not too hard to follow- but it works!
I use my old R-12 gauge set to hook a can of CarQuest (more flamable than GumOut) spray carb cleaner to the fuel rail, pull the fuel pump fuse and run the engine off the carb cleaner. You can set the pressure to about 35 PSI and it will idle for about 20 minutes. I did a bench test on some old injectors and the results were amazing. Oh, and it costs less than $2.00
