I was driving my 96 vette to the gym today and all of a sudden I start getting this "SYS" lite flashing. It flashes twice then goes away..then after a few seconds or so ....does the same again. On my way home from the gym it did not flash or come on at all. Anyone every have this come on? What is SYS? Do I need a tuneup? Something wrong with the car? Car seems to be running fine, its only got 22k miles and I take good care of it and dont beat on it...?? Do I need to bring it to the dealer to get raped? hehehe
My oil change lite is on. Any possible connection? I plan on changing the oil in the next couple days.

Re: "SYS" (Voltech_LT4)
There is a long list of faults that cause the "SYS" message. All relate to things not related to engine operation, so you can relax somewhat.
If the "SYS" is flashing it means the code is currently happening. If its a steady, its a history or it happened recently.
You can pull the codes with a paper clip under the dash. I don't have the contacts memorized, but they are pretty easy.
People most often have SYS when the battery starts to fail. The CCM monitors a wide number of non-engine systems and if it sees voltage drop below 9v, it will throw a code. Typcially, a low battery will start the engine but drop below 9 v for a moment, thus tripping a code. If you pull the codes, you will see, for example the radio, when it has nothing to do with the radio. However, you can get the SYS message and its not the battery. So don't think can only be the battery.
Do you have an aftermarket radio? Mine started flashing the SYS after I installed my radio. There are posts every now and then that have the solution if this is the problem, it involves a couple resistors, if I were at home right now, i'd post the procedure, but i'm not so i can't. if no one has posted that by the time i get home, i will. :D
Mine does the same thing... i did change my radio thou... How do i fix this? My battery is fine... doesnt drop below 9v... so its not the battery right??

Re: "SYS" (Izover4u)
One of the functions monitored by the CCM is the radio. Like I stated earlier, the "SYS" message comes from the CCM which is non-engine related faults. This includes just about all the electrical systems outside the engine.
With a weak battery, when you start the engine, the current draw by the starter may be high enough to cause other systems to see less than 9v for just a moment and set the code resulting in the "SYS" message from the CCM.

If "SYS" is displayed in the LCD section of the instrument panel cluster after the customer installs a new stereo, he will need to do the following:
1. Buy (2) 1 kilo-ohm 1/2 Watt resistors. [Radio Shack part # 271-023. They sell them as a 2-pack for 29 cents.]
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the receiver.
4. Connect one end of both resistors to ignition power. (Yellow wire in the car.)
5. Connect the other end of one resistor to the purple/white wire in the car.
6. Connect the other end of the second resistor to the grey/black wire in the car.
7. Cover all connections and completely cover the resistors.
8. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
I have yet to do this myself, but it should work... :D
