Just got back from lunch, and I noticed that the interior lights were on. They have allways gone out when I started the car. I've checked visually for anything that may have caused this, but found nothing. I'll get the manual and remove the fuse to at least keep them from running the battery down.
Has anyone had this happen to them and what was the cause? I need any and all help. Thanks, Tom :cuss
Re: Interior lights will not go out. (Toms86vette)
Could be a few things. Check the door switches and hatch switch. One may need adjusting or replacing. Could be the interior light timer has gone south. There was a recent post about the location. Check the switches first and go from there. Good luck.
Re: Interior lights will not go out. (Toms86vette)
This happened to me and it was a stupid mistake, I inadvertently turned them on at the headlight switch and because it was daytime I never was able to see them and so I ended up with a weak battery. Also if it is just your door light that stays on make sure that you or someone else did not turn them on at the light by pushing the light in. These sound too easy but you never know.
Re: Interior lights will not go out. (Toms86vette)
I remember something, from a while back, about the door lock switch. If its not in the vertical position when the key is removed from the door, this can happen. Has something to do with the fact that some wear n tear over time allows the key to come out when the contacts that affect the interior lights is not in the "correct" position. That's all from memory, so I may be off a little on the details
Ok, thanks for the information. I have checked the obvious things, the headlite switch is not in switched on for the interior lites. Also its not just the door lites, its the rear hatch lites that stay on also. I just pulled the fuse (which seems to control just about everything inside) to find out where the time relay is for the interior lites. The key worked fine and does not seam to be loose or worn. It worked fine this morning and only started messing up this afternoon. There was no indication that this was about to happen. Does anyone know where the timer relay is located on an 86 coupe? And again Thanks ---> :D

corvette0096, thanks for the visual. I'm gonna store the info for most likely future use. Whatever you're doing, you're really going to town on it!!!

Dude, you had me rollin'! Do you think your dash is gonna squeak any more/less/differently once you're done with the heater core? That is what worries me if I have to tear up in there. :seeya
The Last Detail sells the timers... #675348...Its for an 84L-89...The L means late model. You may want to remove yours and call them to match it up with the various wiring.
Re: Interior lights will not go out. (quiksilver458)
Thanks Quiksilver458 and Corvette0096. I've located the timer in my car and now all I've got to do is locate a part that has been discontinued. Until then I'll just remove the timer and put my fuse back in. Thanks to all for your help. :jester :flag

I made a post about this. It happened on my 91 vert. Lights wouldn't go off at times. Turns out, it was just a worn out door key. Unfortunately, it took the Chevy mechanic 2 hours to figure it out, so the costs went up. But in his defense, he checked the 'obvious' reasons first.
