Default Fuel Problem, Now What?

Hey everyone. My 96 auto had been having a hard time starting for the last month. The car would crank but not start at times and I thought it was because it's been wet on and off here and days that were fairly dry, it would start. When I do get it to start, there are no problems. Power seems right on and no hesitation when on the gas and no rough idling. I thought maybe a plug wire got wet but they were all dry. About 1 week ago, it would just crank with no start on even the driest days. I was thinking maybe opti but no codes and the only symptom was a hard start. Today, I decided to squirt some starting fluid and the car would start, run on the fluid a little, and die. This happened every time I tried it. What's the next step? Could it be as easy as a fuse? If it is the fuse though, why did it run on and off the past month? I'm thinking maybe the sock or filter is clogged or maybe I need a new sending unit and pump. My sending unit needs replacing because it doesn't give the right amount of gas on the gas tank meter. The thing that has me a little stumped is that why the times the car was running it ran great? I mean no hesitations or anything abnormal. Let me know what to check next.
Thanks, Ed.

I would start by checking the fuel pressure at the rail, if that's OK, run some tests to confirm the return line and fuel pressure regulator are ok.
