I am getting ready to drop my ZZ4 into my 84 Vette, but of course the 8" balancer is a problem. Will a stock balancer off an 87 up L98 Vette fit? Does anyone know what the diameter of the stock 88-91 balancer is and is it the same type of balance a ZZ4 requires? Thanks
Are you sure it won't clear? I put a ZZ4 in my '86 a couple years ago and I put it in with the balancer that came with it. It fit fine on mine. Is there any difference with the '84?
Is the ZZ4 internal balanced or external balanced? If it is internal, any Vette crank damper should work from 84 up thru any L98 stock balancer. If it is external balanced then I need to try something different I think
I installed a ZZ4 in my 85 earlier this year. The balancer only had approx. 1/8" clearance to the crossmember and this was with new motor mounts. I considered this to close. I measured and cut the crossmember out with a cut off wheel, rolled a piece of .060" steel sheet, welded in place. The job looked factory when I was done. The ZZ4 uses a standard internal(or neutral) balance balancer, so the 6 3/4" one from a L-98 will work but the timing marks on the timing cover will be approx 9/16" away from the balancer, which could cause some error in reading the timing of the engine.
