Ok, stupid question here, so have some patience, I'm the new guy :)
I'll be changing the stock filter this weekend, to a K&N. What's a better solution, just buying the open lid, or simply cutting the factory one? It's not the $$, but, if you can save some $$ for bigger/better things, and it's the same effect, I'd like to know... Is there a noticeable gain from even doing it?? Thanks! And I'm sure there will be a series of stupid questions in the future, stay tuned!!
Seat of the pants increase...you should notice the K&N right away....continue on from there......get the best...you won't be sorry...as long as you increase the intake of air....works great.....
If you a search on open lid (active & archives) you will find a lot of discussion on what's been done and the reasons.
Cutting your lid will save $$$. But if you can find an open lid for a reasonable price you can save the original lid if you ever need to return to that for any reason. That's what I did ... and while I'm not planning to return to the original lid anytime soon, at least I can easily do so without having to search for another lid.
The stock AC Delco paper filters flow quite well, as in they have excess flow capacity FOR STOCK. The K&N's (direct stock replacements) have the potential to save money, (having to buy a new paper filter). You can clean them, re-oil, put em back together. For some, good therapy too. My 90 provides other forms of therapy maintenance.
Some folks install different styles of K&N, do different things depending on how much work has been done to an engine. If the owner has increased the air flow significantly through the engine, ie made a better air pump in the form of a 350 cu inch (+), sucking large volumes of air, flowing ever more fuel, higher air flow rates are required to achieve full performance.
Dyno tests between stock and stock type K&N on stock engines, well, from my reading, you may be talking dyno variability.
K&N makes extremely good filters, all kinds. Their oil filters will filter to around 10 microns and are worth the money. Good steel cases. Reliable filter media. When my stash of AC Delco UPF's are gone, K&N or Mobil.
Re: A filter question from the new guy!! (dlmeyers)
Thanks!! I appreciate the info.. I had a K&N Cold Air setup on my Dodge, and it proved to be a good add-on.. But, like you said, I like the fact that you can just take it off, clean it, oil it, and put it back on!! It pays for itself the first couple times you do it... I'm just hearing a lot about cutting the lid, and wondered if it was worth it.. In the "mall" section here, I noticed the K&N Open Lid, was around $55... I'm curious if that comes with the filter?? I sort of doubt it, since the filter is listed beside it, without the lid, for $60+... Too bad :(
Either way, K&N's are usually the first thing to be put into any of my vehicles, so why should the Vette be any different? :nonod:
I highly reccomend cutting your own lid. Nice mod ....... cheap to do ....... and it doesn't show.......... (unless someone's so close they have no business being there) :seeya
