My brake booster started leaking so now i am shopping for a new one. I would like to go steel on this one but all i can find is up to 91 on the aftermarket steel units. Is it that it won't fit or is it a pedal feel thing?
A forum member had such a Horrible time with the normal box store cardone plastic boosters which kept cracking. His problem and the Bad Press of the Forum caught the attention of the upper management to the point that they where no longer going to do the boosters in plastic and go all steel. So hopefully by now they have put that plan in to action.
Went looking, you are correct Plastic no problem. STEEL not found

I went to Autozone today and they have listings for plastic ones under a lot of different part numbers and they were all remans, no Cardones . I just don't understand why so many different part numbers for the boosters. I did find some options for steel online but they were 85 to 91 model years for around $100. These were all new. I think I may order one of those and see if it will actually bolt up.
Thanks for the reply 93 ragtop. I was typing and did not see your reply. If yours bolted up I bet mine would be the same. I will order one on line then.

I used one from ac-delco. It was slightly smaller in dia. IMO it fits better....
FWIW I will give you a couple tips,
Take the hush panel out, and drop the 2 steering column bolts. Doing that gives you a path, with a long extension, to reach the 2 nuts that hold the booster to the firewall. For me, this beats the heck out of trying to get to it upside down, laying in the floor.
When you separate the master cyl. from the booster, look for fluid on the back side. If it is leaking into the booster, replace the cylinder.
Dont forget to pick up a foot of 3/8 hose and a barbed connector to extend the vacuum hose.
Since you are replacing your power booster, this would be a good time to consider a HUGE improvement in you braking performance by going to a "dual diaphragm" booster from Power Brake Service, Huntington Beach CA: http://powerbrakeservice.net
A little more money, but a big improvement in braking performance! And yes, it's metal:
I installed the new metal booster and works good. It was an easy install other than one of the bolts. It found that if I removed the gas pedal I was able to get my hand around the column and start the bolts.

Was the booster to pedal pushrod shorter than your stock one?
