Power steering cooler
1992 LT1 Base. Ref. FSM section 3B-3 thru 3B5
While replacing PS hose Item 8 on page 3B-3 and reinstalling the cooler, I found the back left side of the coolers fins were smashed into the steering rack mounting bolt Item 2 on page 3B-5.
Oddly enough nothing appears to bent from an impact. And, the only way to remount the cooler is with the bolt in the cooler fins. I say smashed because the fins don't have a clearance hole. The cooler doesn't leak, just the fins are damaged. You would never notice this by looking at the front of the cooler. It's hard to believe this was done at the factory, but it is a GM product.
The frame mounting brackets are welded in place. The cooler brackets that attach to the frame brackets can only be installed one way.
Has anyone run into this issue? I'm stumped.
Thanks, Dave.
