Hey gang, so I changed my differential fluid. Now before I did this everything was fine however, I replaced the differential fluid with mobile one. Now that I have done that when I put the car in Drive or reverse it's slowly start to take off I get what is like a binding sound or clicking sound coming from the rear end almost as if something is catching. I do not have this car on the road yet so this is just going in and out of my garage. I have replaced almost everything on the back end from the bushings to the U-joints to the wheel bearings Etc. Some have said that in the differential you can only use the approved GM fluid with a limited-slip additive, is this true? Could this be why I'm now getting the binding and clicking sound from the back end? What are your thoughts and have any of you used any other fluid in your differential other than the GM and had no issues? Like I said everything else that I changed it was fine, it wasn't until I changed the rear differential fluid that I had this issue. I am not sure why it's simple fluid change would all of the sudden give me this problem but then again I am not a Master Mechanic. Let me know your experience and if I do need to use GM fluid, what do I get. Thanks

From everything I have read and heard "yes", you do have to use the additive.
I have no personal experience of what happens if it is not used. Maybe this is what happens.
Same thing happened to me when I replaced the fluid. I used Mobil one in the diff. and one bottle of the GM additive. I got noise when cornering.
I ended up using Amsoil diff fluid and the thicker 75-110 severe service with two bottles of GM additive.
No more noise after that.
I just had mine changed last month when I had the car in for state inspection. Used Amsoil severe gear 75w-90 and one bottle of the GM friction modifier additive. No noise whatsoever from the rear.
FWIW -- conventional Castrol 75W90 plus 4oz of GM additive in my 85, and I service my differential more often than necessary. 165K miles and no issues to date.

i have been using amsoil for quite a few years for all my oil/grease applications after a friend of mine 'gave' me all the fluids to service my car. i noticed the difference at the first oil change.
I'm not sure if Mobil 1 differential oil is available without the LS additive, just be sure that the bottle says LS. If it does not, you need to use the additive. Even if it does say LS, you might need to put in some more additive. This is a common issue. Not all LS differential clutches are built the same, the friction discs have different materials and different diameters, and the springs have different pressures too.
