I was installing my front Y-pipe friday night, and I snapped a bolt, I aready put up one post about it. Well today after finishing my fuel pump, I started the car up, hoping that the other 2 bolts and age would keep the front Y-pipe from leaking. Well I was wrong, way wrong. It has a HUGE exhaust leak! So im basically screwed! I have to get headers I guess? I can't drive the car anywhere to get it fixed. The worst part is tht the vette is my everyday driver, now I have no way to get to school or work! I don't know what to do, im basically really ! :mad
Ok calm down. What bolt broke? The one that goes from the manifolds to the y-pipe? The are actually in the manifolds and the y-pipe just slides through them. Those studs can easily be replaced if you take the manifold off (six 9/16" bolts i think).
First off see if you can get a C-clamp over the missing stud to take care of the exhaust leak; if so, wire the clamp in place so even it it shakes loose it won't fall off.
Then pull the stock header and have a new stud pressed in.
Well, if you think it is really bad, and can't find a machine shop that will drill out that stud and put a new one in. I have a pair of stock 1990 exhaust manifolds sitting in garage, that will fit. And the new stock gaskets to Heads top go with. I am only one state away , just across the bay bridge. I sell them cheap to ya.
The bolt that goes from the front Y-pipe to the exhaust manifold, Im not sure exactly how its in place. It is on the passenger side. I have to torch the other bolts to get the Y-pipe off, and then hopefully get the exhaust manifold off with out breaking any bolts, if I broke one off in the head, im really screwed. The Y-pipe bolts are 9/16, im not sure about the exhaust manifold bolts. If it comes down to it, I might have to buy that exhaust manifold, its a lot cheapier than TPIS headers. Thanks everyone for the replies, im still at a stand still, don't know which way to go?

Re: Ok Im SCREWED!!! (Red91Vette)
Just heat up those nuts really well with a good hot torch and they will come off. Drop the Y.
If you have any stud left, heat it cherry and try to get it out with a stud remover. If not enough stud left, pull the exhaust manifold and a shop will get it out. While you are there, replace all the studs and nuts. Use the right parts, I think the nuts are copper or bronze or something - anybody know?

i agree, this job would be a piece of cake with the manifold on your work bench
I have to get two more bolts off the Y-pipe first, and I am trying not to break them. I got a torch from work today, hopefully it will be strong enough to heat up the bolts. I can't do it tonight because its raining outside, and my parents won't let me use the torch inside the garage  . After I get the Y-pipe off, I am going to hopefully successfully get the passenger side exhaust manifold off without breaking any bolts and knock that old bolt out and somehow get a new on in there?
...While you are there, replace all the studs and nuts....
Replace ALL 3, if one broke the other two won't be too hard to break as well. You don't want to go through all the work of R&R'ing the exhaust manifold and then break another stud while putting the Y-pipe back on.
BTW, are you sure it's the stud that's broke? I had the whole flange break off on me, I almost bought a new manifold until the Forum convinced me to just get it welded, saved me about $480 :D
Pull the manifold and take it to a shop, they won't charge very much and you avoid damaging the manifold with the torch. :seeya
I am postive its the bolt, I have the other half of it. I kept it to bring it into work, and I can see te rest of the bolt inside the flange. Well tonight I got some gas, but I need some adapter and hopefully this weekend I will have the bolts off and the manifold off too, and take it into work monday and get new stud(s) in. Thanks everyone.
I had 2 studs break on me when I did my exhaust. I soaked the hell out of the buste studs with penatrating oil for about 24 hours. I used a stud remover that looks like a regular 3/8 socket from the outside, but the inside looks like a female version of an easy out (call some good tool stores in your area, they should have them) with different diameters for different size studs. Be sure your'e good and centered on the stud when you go to remove it. I got replacement studs from a local chain auto parts store. I did this with the manifolds on the car.
The method i have used without fail to remove studs is to MIG weld a
Washer onto the stud at full power to get plenty of heat into the stud then i weld a nut to the washer by filling in the threaded hole with weld again to get heat in. Once it stops glowing red just put a spanner on the nut and they just unscrew.
By the way have you got anywhere with your cold air intake or is it a bad time to ask ?

I assume you mean the TPIS cold air induction? Thats my brother, went to put the post up, and didn't realize I was signed on his name, but the cold air hasn't come yet. I don't know whats taking so long? I was gonna try it too, for the speed density cars out there, but I plan on charging my vette, so that 300$ would be a waste.
