So I’ve got a code on my 88c4, I’ve done the paperclip trick and it’s goin 1234 pause 123.
I was cruzing along behind a v8 land cruiser, and decided that he was goin to slow, so I dropped it down and massaged the throttle and as I was flying past the over weight noisy pig, it made a funny noise, and the check engine light came on, no significant noises or loss in performance came after, but there must be something goin on for check engine light to come on.

I've used the paperclip method to pull codes on my 90 L98 which is probably similar to your 88. Light will flash the number 12 three times to show the system is working then pause and flash any stored codes 3 times. There is a short pause between the code numbers and a longer pause if there is more than one code stored. Once all the codes are displayed the system will flash 12 three times again to indicate there are no more codes and then go thru the sequence again until the paperclip is removed.
So I pulled a code 43, electronic spark control module, and it’s related to the knock sensor.
so I replaced both, unplugged the negative battery terminal before removal and replacement, that’s what the book said to do, so it clears the code,
after start up, the code has been cleared, but it wouldn’t idle to save itself, so I turned up the idle on the throttle body, it idles ok, but am I missing something, it runs ok, but would that need a tickle on the dissy the get it idle, before the module **** itself it was idling fine
