Not sure shorty headers are worth the effort and cost. I'd stick with stock if that is the option because of emissions.

Look into switching to LT1 manifolds, a pair should cost about $100

Not many shorty brands to pick anymore, not being made. I too would look into LT1 manifolds.

Is there much gain from stock?

The L98 exhaust manifolds aren't the best. The LT1 complete, exhaust manifolds to tips, is a thrifty route to true dual exhaust. Shorties are also called block huggers.

There are budget friendly Long Tubes if you seek them out. I wouldn't waste any time with anything else... Good headers will have as close to equal length tubes as possible, at least a 3 to 3-1/2" collector, O2 sensor bungs and even possibly provisions for air injection for emissions. All that said, theres headers without any of those provisions that will be cost effective. Also, dont be afraid to look at used headers. I've purchased a few sets right here on the forum and had great results.

You'd get 10-15 from full 1 3/4", but probably not more than 5 just from the LT1 exhaust manifold.

Correcting the L98s exhaust design into a true dual system and cutting out at least the precats would be the better plan.

The L98 exhaust is pretty poor.

I also agree with the LT1 manifolds. Cheap upgrade.

I wish someone could post side by side pics of the L98 vs LT1 manifolds. I had a pic of a set I sold, but I can't find it. You can definitely see the difference. Long tubes are the way to go, especially if you are doing other mods (H/C), but for a $100+ I would go this route vs shorties

You can maintain all emissions equipment w/the LT1 manifold. Not sure what the hang up is there...

Was thinking more of the aftermarket headers where emissions may become a problem.

Yep. That makes sense. I'd agree that hurting emissions compliance for the benefits of shorties wouldn't be worth it for me, either.
