Does this sound like bad optispark?1995,stalled without warning at red light, cranks but will not start, is getting fuel, no spark at spark plug via spark tester, pulled code from digital dash, code h16, cleared code, tried to restart, cranks but no start, Code 16 appears again, Replaced ignition control module, still no start, Does this sound like a bad optispark, especially with code 16? Car has a Cardone optispark from Napa that previous owner had installed a year and about 3500 miles ago. Thanks for any advice.
With a code 16 it does sound like a bad opti. If there is no low resolution pulse there will be no spark or drive to the injectors. That is the main clock pulse for the PCM and it will do nothing.
I have been reading about more new opti sparks with very pre-mature failures from all the companies putting out optis in the past years. The optical units are junk and don’t hold up. Many are going back to the Delphi/GM opti or rebuilding the original ones.
The opti with the michibee optical units are the best
Agreed. It sounds like your low-res signal has disappeared. A friend of mine has a 95 and installed two house-brand optis from Autozone that were both bad out of the box - neither had a hi-res signal, so in his case the car would run but not quite right. But without a low-res signal I imagine the car won't run at all, like pcolt94 wrote.
Thank you guys. Now to decide what brand opti to buy I am considering going with a Petris opti spark. I have consistently seen good reviews on these. Hopefully it will last a while. Also considered MSD, API and AC/Delco remanufactured. After researching I keep leaning towards Petris.

Mine definitely won't run at all. It does nothing except the starter turns over. It doesn't even act like it's trying to fire.

Petris, AIP, or the Opti Doc rebuilts from eBay are the only ones I'd personally consider. The first two seem to have new sensors that work and last much longer than most new ones. The Opti Doc rebuilts reuse known-good OE Mitsubishi sensors, and he sends you a video of your unit being test with a scope so you can see that both signals are good. The MSD and AC/Delcos are using cheap garbage sensors and are probably no better than the Valucraft/Cardone crap you're replacing. Don't let the brand name on the box fool you. They aren't OE quality by a long shot.
