Default Steering column interchange?

I’m picking up up a 91 on Friday that has a very loose steering column. It’s not the typical down and left but loose all over. I’m fearing the worst that the knuckle is destroyed. The turn signal switch is also toast. I’ll be hitting the junkyard after I verify what’s going on with it however is there any other cars that the steering column is able to be swapped with the 91? Or maybe just internals? I don’t mind going with an older c4 column if that fits also. Just want to get the car on the road for now. Thanks.

Ok if nobody knows about any other cars that the columns interchange, how about different year c4’s? I know if I go older I’ll lose the airbag, but I’m ok with that for now if I can just get the car back together.

Was the prior owner hefty and stout? (Ie. Used the steering wheel as a lever to get in and out)

It was like this before the last owner bought it 5 years ago so I can’t say. I’m guessing it was used for a handle though. I’ll pull it apart to verify but it’s really loose all over.

I put a 1996 steering column in my 1990, and it works quite well. I have an aftermarket steering wheel though, so I don't know about the airbag working.

my understanding is the wiring pin connectors are different. i was looking into putting a 96 column in a 92 and it required a small amount of work to do that (because of the wiring). the knuckle is only about $150 i think, just need a wheel puller.

I never re-pinned anything. The Dash cluster is different, but I don't have any problems with the steering column.

I'll paste the email i got from a C4 parts supplier...My question was can i put a 96' column in a 92'

"All of the LT1 cars had air bags, and 2 years of the L98, 90 and up.
This column could work in the 92, but you will find two differences. 1 is only cosmetic, where the writing on the turn signal arm would have white lettering on this as compared to a 92 which would have orange lettering. The second difference would be the air bag clock spring. The 91-93 cars have a different wiring connection for the air bag to the bag clock spring than what the 94-96 cars have. You could change the wiring connection but being an air bag and the safety issues that presents I couldn't recommend it"
