89’ code 36
I to own an 89” and have been experiencing the same problem and I’d like to let you in on a couple of things.
#1 As I found out the hard way 88 & 89 did not use a A/C Delco MAF sensor.. They came through with a Bosch sensor part # Repc316708 available on eBay from Carpartswholesale.. Any other sensor will not work properly in our cars.. To check the sensor with the engine running at normal temp carefully unplug the sensor and the engine should die.. If the engine keeps running the sensor is no good.. If the engine dies it tells you the MAF sensor and relays are working..
#2. Code36 can also mean you have a vacuum leak as well.. As with my car I have only 23k on it yet almost every vacuum line needed to be changed due to age.. If you grab any of the lines and get a black greasy film on your fingers it’s time to change them..You’ll need to check them all from front to rear especially to the fuel tank.. One almost always overlooked is just in front of the left rear tire about 2 1/2” long that goes from vertical to horizontal.. The other is hidden up inside the spare tire compartment about 6” long.. The small one is 3/16” diameter and the long one is 1/4” dia..
In my 89” I’ve changed all the vacuum lines the MAF sensor and relays the TPS and the IAC value.. When I disconnect the battery and clear the codes the car runs perfectly but after running 50 miles or so then shutting it off the code comes back on and the car starts running shitty again.. I also noticed I’m not getting any vacuum to the fuel tank when I unscrew the cap.. Needless to say I’m still looking for the problem..
oh well the joys of owning a C4 I guess.. If and when I figure it out I’ll get back to you but I hope this will help you out in the meantime..
Best of luck
Thomas
There are two relays on the firewall directly behind the battery. One controls general power to the MAF, the other controls the burnoff feature at shutdown.
I recently had code 36 come up on my '89, and traced it to a bad burnoff relay. $15 later I'm up and running with no codes.
