Exhaust Options
I have a 1990 6 speed convertible (it's actually my wife's). I noticed that the exhaust pipe going to the mufflers has holes rusted in it so it's time for a replacement. My wife likes the exhaust sound it has so I don't want anything super load or with a drone. I'm looking to start with a catback exhaust but I want to run long tube headers and eliminate the cats in the future. New exhaust must be stainless and compatible with future exhaust. What would you all recommend.
Thanks

Well if she doesn't want drone, Corsa is the answer. You can buy their catback setup or just the mufflers and fab the rest.
However the headers with just about any other muffler is going to drone, and especially so after cat deletion, right at around 2000rpm where you cruise most likely. You can try X-pipes or other crossovers to eliminate it, but theres no guarantee.

3" duals with long tube headers, no cats, x pipe, and straight through mufflers.

Thanks for input so far. Has anyone installed an Allen's True Dual. It looks like a nice product and is available from the exhaust manifolds back. My only concern is if it will clear the X-brace.

Why eliminate the cats? If she doesn't like drone I'm betting she wont like the extra smell it can often produce by doing so.
Corsa is the only system that really does a great job with drone.

I own two Corvettes of different years 1968 and 1988 and both of my Corvettes are using Allen's SS "Chambered Exhaust " systems purchased different years at Carlisle. The C3 is a true dual exhaust with no crossover. The C4 is a ordinary Cat-back system. I have over 20 plus years with both of my chambered systems and they still sound great. I would vouch for their quality as I have done nothing and they still look great.
Allen's SS Exhaust company used to come to Corvettes at Carlisle and I scored some really good deals on the systems and installed them myself. Maybe I should be nice and clean them up and paint them as I have the plain aluminized Steel they offer. They offer levels of sound, their idea of loud is LOUD. My chambered pipes save weight and sound nice, no more clunky mufflers there in the rear of the car. It is not quite as loud as side-pipes but all the music comes out the rear of the car.
My C4 system was replaced with a new aftermarket Hi-Flow catalytic converter was installed and it was easy to install. The system I have uses the rectangular wide exhaust openings like the later models but works fine on the 1988. There is NO drone in my 1988 Coupe and that is a wonderful benefit but I suspect it has more to do with the new Catalytic converter as well. We have seen folks without their Catalytic having issues with Drone. And we have heard of people with no drone on the barest of exhaust systems.

Theres no real reason with a stock car to eliminate the catalytic converters. You need to get high flow cats if not wanting to keep the OEM units. With headers, no cats and a cat back, youre just about guaranteed a drone. Ive not had Corsa exhaust, but many say it has no drone.... other than that, maybe consider shorty headers, high flow cats and a factory replacement Walker exhaust behind that..... that might not give you a drone...
