Does anyone lube 6-speed shifter?
If the manual you're looking in is Haynes or Chilton, perhaps it's referring to the shifters for the 84-88 4+3 trannies ... those were external, so required lubrication. It was easy on my 88--I took the carpeted panel off from the left side of the transmission tunnel to get at the shifter mechanism, and just sqirted engine oil.
Now getting to the shifter pivot points is another story, but I'll give you an alternative.
To do it right, you'll need to remove the console including leather boot. Under the console is a rubber boot with 4 acorn nuts. Remove the 4 nuts, and slide the rubber boot up the shifter. (the boot is larger than the cut out in the floor) This will give you a clear view of the shifter pivot points.
An alternative is to buy a SPRAY CAN of white lithium grease. Using the extention that comes with it, slide the extention between the shifter and leather boot, and continue down through the rubber boot and spray.
You may need to cut a hanger and tape it to the extention to make it rigid enough to pass between the rubber boot and shifter as it's a tight fit.
While the shifter is attached to the top of the trans, it is fully enclosed in a rubber boot, and is not part of the trans internals as some believe.
Hope this helps,
Joe
