So if You were starting out with nothing, No Engine or Trans as of Yet, and wanted to end up with an LS Engine in a C4 with an Auto Trans, how would You do it ? It looks as though bolting the Tail Shaft of a 700R4 onto a 4L60e or variant isn't as simple as it sounds. So what is the easiest least engineering way to do this ? LS bolt pattern up front Ladder bar out back.
….. I don't understand your comment about the tailshaft … the tail housing is a direct bolt-on from 700R4 to 4L60E … the tailshaft from an F-body or truck trans is approximately 5/8" longer than the vette and can be easily cut off if necessary … keep in mind that the driveshaft's length is fixed by the C-beam (it doesn't slip in or out of the trans while driving) … so the extra shaft length might not be an issue as long as the slip yoke engages the bushing in the tail housing .....
I would do a 4l60e. I would do another 700R4 before I did a 6L60e
The 6L60E is not very appealing to me and will be expensive. If for some reason I just had to have 6 gears I would look at a 4L60E/gear vendors or a TCI 6X transmission before a 6L80E.
Ok so maybe this is much easier than I was getting by reading other posts. So if I was to acquire a 2WD drive LS Engine Trans Combination I could just use the Tail Housing off a 700R4. If the Tail Shaft needs to be shorter have people been doing it with out disassembling the Trans ?

….. Take the original tail housing off , wrap everything exposed in shop towels , and cut the excess shaft off with a hi-speed cut-off wheel , deburr the end of the shaft and clean up the fines from the cutting , install the 'vette tail and you're done …..
