Did the end of the retaining clip break ? Or did it just pull out (or was pulled out and never put back correctly) and allow the support rod to pop off the ball ?
Your picture still shows the retaining clip on it so I can't see how it got pulled off the ball, unless the clip had been pulled off and for the picture you re-attached it.
You typically don't have to pry the clip off to put the rod back on. Just push it onto the ball to reconnect. To take it off, you have to remove the clip, but I have replaced a bunch of these on rear hatches, hoods, motor coach bays, etc, and the instructions always say to leave the clip on and just push it into place.
If it doesn't stay in place, look to see that the clip still works, if so, you may need a new rod, hopefully not and something just got in the way and wedged it off.

.
From my experience that is correct, replacement struts have the clip installed so all that has to be done is push it on to the ball. If someone tried to remove a strut end by just pulling on it without removing the clip I'd think they are going to cause damage to the strut and ball.
