I understand that the `84 TBI harness can be modified to run 8 or 9 injectors as commonly found in the 86-89 TPI setup (or perhaps more correctly as a 90-92 since the '84 vettes are speed-density). Since the `84 TBI has dual throttle-bodies / two injectors, it should be a pretty small leap forward to mimic the two banks of 4 injectors each on later TPI systems. Basically if anyone knows how to do this or knows of a good place to find directions, I'd love to see it. Also if I'm missing any important details. I'm doing a TPI conversion on the cheap and would really like to retain the dash cluster gauges functioning that *I believe* is lost when using a harness/ECM from later years. I've seen a few places that will do the conversion for anywhere from $250-$450, but if it's "simple" I wouldn't mind giving it a go `round.
And I know I'd be better off with a SR or MR etc, but the key words here are "on the cheap!" :p:

Oh, and I'm posting it here instead of the crossfire forum, since most of those guys wouldn't much care for my bailing on the Xfire...
Couple questions
The ECM end connectors are going to be vastly different for 84 and then 85-91.
Well I was thinking I could use the same ECM (since I'm not actually replacing the harness, just modifying it to run another 6 injectors on a TPI intake). I 'heard somewhere' that this mod would work because the dual throttlebody injectors firing would pretty much mimic the 4 injector bank-firing of the TPI systems. So I could use the same harness, ECM, and peripheral sensors (the 84 is speed density, so that's throwing me off a bit. would I have to use a 90-91 manifold?); and all that's left is to wire the manifold sensors appropriately. So the plugs for the manifold sensors may be different, but wouldnt that mean I wire them without the plugs- or will there be variations in the actual # of wires per sensor that would keep it from working? oh well.
You don't need to use a 90-91 plenum. However, if you do, the plenum has a mounting pad for the MAP sensor. If you use the 85-89 setup, you will have to mount the MAP sensor somewhere not on the upper plenum and will just run a vacuum line to the MAP.
As far as everything else--I honestly don't know. I would think that the logic needed for the TPI is much different than that for the CF but I have never owned a CF setup.
Its MUCHO different.. I mean the engine charactersitics are different,
sensors are different, fuel pressure is TOTALLY different, ECM HAS to know whats going on, u can't jsut split it 6 extra injectors and see if they work.. Sorry bud, but it aint THAT easy.. lol
If it were, you'd be seeing ZR1 plenum / intake conevrsions on many TPI C4's too.. :D
yes... I understand there's a difference between 12psi and 45psi. Perhaps I should have made a point of - dare I say it - assuming the hardware swaps (that's a dangerous assumption I know- but baby steps!). The key words here are 'wiring,' 'harness,' and 'modifications!' I was just interested in whether or not the later sensors (90-91 manifold sensors, for instance) had the same wiring (not necessarily the same harness plugs) and be compatible signal wise should I try to retrofit them into an 84 harness. I.e. would the `84 ECM recognize the signal from a 90 MAP sensor- if I could even hook it up in the first place. I do not doubt there to be some bugs/hurdles for what I'm referring to, but I think it is an interesting question- well for anybody with an 84.... :p:
However, since I seem to have such difficuly conveying the purpose of my query... and to avoid further unneeded tangients- I'll apply my curiosity to the Big Book of Fuel Injection and see what turns up.
Please keep us informed if this progresses, I'm sure that there are sevral of us that would be interested, if it can be done, I would guess most of us haven't chimed in because we just don't know the answers, keep us posted, and good luck! :smash:
