Actually, you may not even have to jack up the vette to do the oil change. I can access everything just by reaching under the vette. I like the K&N filters because I can use a 1" wrench to loosen and tighten the oil filter. Also, pre-fill the filter with oil before you put it on.
Incase no one has told you, run a bead of oil on the rubber gasket on the filter. If you dont, it WILL leak and cause you grief. After you are done, let it run for a few minutes and check for leaks and make sure you check the oil level too. Good luck on the oil change.
Be sure to fill the new filter with oil before installing it. Use Mobile -1 oils and a quality filter (K&N, Mobile-1 etc.) Congrats on doint it yourself. Sid.
Get yourself some Rhino ramps from Walmart. They are about $25 bucks and worth it. They work great. That way you can lay under the car safely and see what you are doing. It's a piece of cake and very simple.
Be sure to fill the new filter with oil before installing it.
I've never heard of/done this when changing the oil. Can someone elaborate?
It simply means pouring a bit of oil into the filter before screwing it on. The perceived benefit is that your engine spends less time at zero oil pressure thus allowing lubrication to move higher in the motor sooner. I've never been too dogmatic about doing this since you're talking about a difference of fractions of a second at best, but it certainly dosen't hurt; and in the case of the Vette it's pretty easy since the filter is mounted vertically and the risk of spillage is minimal.
what about for other cars with filters mounted so that spilling is going to happen if this method is used? Still do it?
Pretty simple to answer, if the oil cant stay in the filter because it spills out, there really isnt a point in pre-filling the filter. Afterall, on the ground is the same as not filling it. :yesnod:
