Default Regarding the 36 IRS

Hey guys. SO I recently completed a lovely 385 sbc with a lightweight valvetrain, 11.5:1 compression, 93 octane, etc... all the goodies for a wonderful little street motor. The motor dynoed on an engine dyno at 540hp and 535tq crank. Now I'm only 19 and to say building an sbc over an LS was a pocketbreaker is a.. uh... understatement . But I love the old SBC platform more because of its uniqueness in modern day and.. honestly... you can't beat the sound of an SBC even if you have a cammed LS. so anyways, to my question.

Because I'm, shall we say, rather tight on funds right now after the engine build, Im wondering if i could get away with running my dana 36 without grenading it. I was hoping to put 305 tyres out back on 17" rims and use a mildly grippy street tyre. though I know those 36's hate stickies and have a tendency to grenade. My trans is a 700r4 built by," The man the myth the legend" Dana, so im not concerned about that being the weak link. Let me know your thoughts before i put this motor in my c4. Cause i dont want the old girl's rear end going on me as soon as I hook up her new heart.

Thanks!

Spencer

If you're the kind of guy who can break an anvil, it will break. If you can "milk" things to work, then it will last.

So its one of those situations where a rolling start is better than a hard launch?

It should last quite some time on street tires, maybe longer than the engine.

But yes, a hard shock delivers a lot of instantaneous torque, and that is what will break it. That said, even my 398 hasn't broken my D36 when I stomp it from a stop, yet. After 5 years though I'm going to go ahead and do the D44 swap soon.

Switch to DRs or slicks though and kaboom, might last 50 passes, might not last 1.

^ Vader is right. It's the shock (from drag-style launches) that kills the D36 more than anything else. So if you are not running fat sticky tires and you are not dumping the clutch from every stop, you should be good for a while. Just drive it a little more reasonably until you get the D44 installed, you will still have plenty of fun with that motor.

There's always a "weakest link". You get to chose, or you get to be surprised!

I agree that street tires SHOULD be your "fuse". Avoid neutral drops, rollbacks and drag slicks.

Same strategy I am using. Street tires will blow over before blowing up the D36

D36 comes with 2.59( aweful) or 3.07 better. Gear change gets pricey. A used D44 with 3.54 or 3.45 might be a better alternative.
