One diff is warm, a swishing or modulating sound can be heard at low speeds. No noticeable noises at higher speed. Rarely can hear in car without window down. I just replaced u-joints on half-shafts and wheel bearings. That fixed the customary popping noises, but this swishing whine remains. Diff fluid recently changed as well, and LSD additive included.
Car has less than 50k miles.
Could this be ring and pinion? Is it significant enough to worry with since I cant hear at highway speeds?
no, it's clearly in diff. I say swishing because it's not a constant whine. I modulates in time with what I assume is rotation of axles, or so it seems.
Jack the back end of the car up safely, and put in gear. Put a pipe or a stethoscope on the differential directly into your ear. You should hear any noises loud and clearly. A lift would be best though.
Could be the brakes. Mine are making a noise like that. In the spring I am going to take some anti-chatter clips and put them in and see if that helps.
Alternatively, go out and get the parts warmed up, pull into your driveway, turn the car off, jack it up and use a long paper tube (like Christmas wrap) and listen to the differential while someone spins the tires. You could do it with the car running if you are careful. A tube (or mechanics stethascope) will let you hear if the sound is coming from the differential.
