Changing to a stock equivalent? Probably nothing. Changing to a "Performance" version? Lighter wallet unless your system can accommodate it. If it is the performance version without supporting mods, just make "Vroom! Vroom!" sounds and it feels better.
I agree with aklim. I have a reasonably powerful (~420rwhp) 396 and the stock MAF doesn't lower the power at all. You'd need a serious power upgrade before that became an issue, and I'm sure the throttle body would be a bottleneck sooner than the MAF.
To answer your question, yes it should be plug and play. I have serious doubts about whether it will change the way your car runs. I don't know as much about 85 L98s as I do about later LTs, but it would be worth data-logging to see what your MAF is sending your computer and what the A/F mixture is before you just throw more money and parts at it. When I think about "sluggish" engines, I think about it pulling timing first. In another ongoing thread, the OP had all kinds of problems with his car pulling timing and it turns out to be caused by a plugged exhaust. That's just an example of things that could be causing this. The MAF is worth checking, but it's probably way down on the list of likely causes.
Not why everyone thinks I'm try to get more power, but I'm not. Just looking for the car to run 100 %, I've looked at the IAC, Throttle body cleaned, full tune up, wires, plugs and cap. No clogged cat, compression it perfect on all cylinders. Oil change, transmission fuild change. All seems well just a little sluggish
I don't think he was talking about a sluggish engine performance, but rather a sluggish MAF sensor, either responding slowly or incorrectly. Also, I could be wrong.
