The way oil is labeled, the first number is the viscosity of the oil when it is cold
The second number refers to when it is at operating temp, so 5w-30 has a lower viscocity at a cold engine temp, but the operating temp both being 30 is supposed to be the same according to the manufacturer. The advantage I see of 5w-30 is being thinner at cold temp allows the oil to flow easier getting to parts of the engine quicker, especially in cold weather when the engine is cold. Hope this helps.
You got to be kidding!!!! Right....
I changed my oil on an '84 vette...to 10wt/40wt....the oil pressure dropped at operating temp/ pressure to 29lbs from 45lbs....really should have stuck with the 20wt/50wt oil....
I will change soon.....my '84 vette has 88k miles on it..

Re: oil viscosity (oldace84)
Here's an even better idea, oldace84! Give gear oil a try, that will really do the job. Or even better, stuff some wheel bearing grease in there. Thicker the better, right? RIGHT! OK, OK!
I only gave my opinion....so are you better than the rest of us.......
Come on tell me....do you have a problem .....many of us hi milage vettes use the 20wt/50wt oils....so give me the reason why you feel you have to be an ___ ____!!!

Give me a call back.....and I will grease you....to bad your not up the street........Your an a__ ___!!!!!!!!!!!!!
20-50w is ideal for older engines with some milage, his statement about pressure is one good reason, another is the amount of 10-40 you will burn on a 100k+ engine that's over 10yrs old. before i blew up my 1990 i was running 20-50w & that was even burning a little, 10-40 would have been unthinkable. i wouldn't pay too much attention to the people who's knowledge of oil doesn't go past what it says on the oil cap.
