Default Gas bar graph gauge issue....Need Help fast......

I just noticed that the bar graph is not going off the full mark since my ;last fill up...... What could be the problem.? I have all ready gone 100 miles and still is not moving.... All other parts work fine except for the miles to go before empty..... I am at a loss on this.....Could it be the sending unit.... If that could be it, where is it and how do I change it and how hard is it to do?

Any help would be great... I afraid I might run out of fuel and be stranded some where..... I don't want that......

Thanks in advance for the help.....

It is a one piece unit that includes your filler neck, sender, and fuel pump. It is very easy to get to. Remove your filler door, remove big rubber grommet(drain), disconnect fuel lines (3), and remove surrrounding bolts. The unit should be carefully removed and inspected for bad connections and corrosion. For better instructions you should get a repair manual, like chiltons or haynes at your local auto parts store. Good luck on the fix. Oh yeah, I had the same problem and cleaning all the rust off of mine really helped alot.

I think the bars on an 88 should be about 1 bar per gallon. you may want to set your trip meter at fillups.. you may try pulling the ground off the battery first to see if this resets it.. If the float is stuck you will have to remove the gas lid and boot.. you will see the screws that seal the sending unit to the tank..

Hope this helps..

disconnect your battery before you start to work on it and try not to smoke while you are back there. ;)

I am going out there to see whats up with it now.... I will post what I find out.... It did not move any today at all.....Well maybe one bar down, but right back up to the top..... I hate it when things don't work perfectly..... Figures, something would go wrong when I am fixing to sell it....Maybe.... Oh well it's just money.... Can't spend it when im dead.... ....
..Anything special I should look for while I am looking around in there......?

Took the whole assembly out this morning and did not see anything wrong... Hell, it all looked brand new... I looked it over real close and then put back together and tested, and it dropped down to half tank line.... which is where it should have been by now...... I am thinking that maybe I filled it just enough that the float could have gotten stuck.... or at least thats what it seems like to me.... Please correct me if i'm wrong.... Stranger things have been known to happen.....Hope this is fixed....
