OK, I made a wish list for my stimulus check.....everything stupid I don't really need....got to help the economy.....on that list is a AIR HORN for my 85.....just not loud enough for traffic in S Fl.....lots of room there so my question is, will any old 12 system work? can anybody recommend one?....thanks, Paul
Does the sound really get out of the enclosed area? I ask because for someone who uses a C4 in daily commuter driving the horns are a real shortfall due mostly I think to the design requirements of the car. No forward facing opening. Over the years I've nearly gotten crunched several times because no one could hear the horns outside the car at 60 mph.
Do people notice you in traffic when you use them?
I recommend Fiamm air horns. These are what 60s and 70s Italian cars came with. You can get new metal horns with compressor for about $175. Don’t buy the $60 ones with the plastic horns. You can also go to a junk yard and get them out of a 70s Fiat, just make sure you grab the compressor with the fittings and the trumpets. I can’t say how they’ll work on a corvette (I’m in the process of finding my first vette now) but I have used them on a 79 Camaro and a 73 firebird and they were plenty loud. The new metal ones are rated at 118*dbs according to Amazon.
Head to your local auto wrecking yard and find a early to mid-70's Cadillac or full size Buick or Olds. that still have both horns on the car. These horns will be much loder than the horns found in newer cars. Take both horns (they have different notes) along with the mounting tabs. They aren't much larger than the OEM Corvette horns.so they should bolt in. They have a single wire so that would be all of the electrical requirements.
Maybe find somebody that has one of these big cars and ask tem to blow the horn just so you can hear them.
If you want new horns, the FIAMM horns like Griot's Garage sells will work fine. A little pricey but good quality. I think they are 106 dB.
