My car decided to act up on me again last night. Which is alright, because she's only left me stranded once before, well twice before... Just that my personal life blows right now. My car's just sitting and i don't care!! But i guess i need to get around to fixing it... So where would you all suggest I look to get a new alternator for my '93 LT1? The dealer? :jester That wouldn't be painful at all!! And how much would you guys think a new alternator is going to cost? Thanks you guys, at least you don't break my heart!
A lot of people have good luck with remans from Pep Boys or Advance or NAPA. I would prefer to repair my own parts but the newer alternators are difficult to rebuild at home and parts aren't readily available for them. The only way to get a "brand new" one would be the dealer. Find one that you trust . :seeya
Consider some research and find a shop that specializes in alternators and starters. Money saved by bringing in the alternator, bench work. They will likely have a test machine, making sure its the problem before they take it apart. Maybe $40-$120. Depends. Besides, you will know what parts were replaced.

Re: Where to get an alternator? (dlmeyers)
I agree that a local electrical shop is the best way to go. Having said that though, when mine died on a forum outing to N.C. I bought one from Advance Auto and it has held up good so far.
If you buy the 140 AMP alternator from Discount Auto Parts, you will get a new GM unit for $130. They do not reman that unit, and it works awesome as a retrofit to the failure prone 105/130 AMP older units.
I got one by simply asking for a '96 corvette alternator since that was the only one used in 96.
BTW: It completely cured my low rpm idle voltage drop with AC and fans on.

This is what I did and I'm satisfied. The typical rebuilts only replace what was broken then they put it back on the shell. When I had mine rebuilt they replaced all of the diodes and the bearings and cost was about $90.00.
One good thing about having YOURS rebuilt is that you know what you have. I was in a bind for a starter once and had to buy a rebuilt starter and years later when it failed again I was shocked to see what kind of junk was inside..... I'm glad my car has components that I can work with .... :seeya
I had mine in for almost two years now. Before that I was lucky to get two months from a Pep Boys one.
I agree with this. I replaced my Pep-Boys lifetime guaranteed alternator three times in two years before I decided it wasn't worth the trouble. Next, I went to Napa and told them I wanted a quality alternator and not the one they sold to compete with Autozone, Pep-Boys, Discount, and Advance alternators. They gave me one that had a two year warranty that never has gone bad -- it also cost twice as much.
However, I think the Delco rebuilt alternators that Advance Auto has would be good ones. And, I've heard that the "Gold" rebuilt units that Autozone sell are good.
My advice -- spend more with a shorter warranty, and you won't have to replace it for a long time.

:nonod: I'm on my 4th rebuilt Delco from Advance in the past 14 months. This one doesn't sound good either, just a matter of time before it goes, I bet. They replace them every time, no questions asked, but they NEVER have one in stock, so there's always some down time.
Well, as a last resort, JCWhitney has a new "Mean Green" alternator that they claim will last for 250,000 miles. It supposedly has a 220 amp output. And, the price is something around $320 -- I don't have the book in front of me.
You probably can do a search on JCWhitney and find it. http://www.mean-green.com/products/alternator.html
