my l98 is dying! I am trying to see how much it will cost me for an lt1 or ls1 as apposed to rebuilding mine. If it is only a little more and it is compatible with my 700R4 that would be great. I dont know if it will be worth it anymore to spend all the money to fix this old engine. Please let me know if you have an engine for sell for a good price!

Re: L98 crapping out!!! (amswak)
What do you mean by dying? Almost anything can be fixed without a total replacement. There are a lot of people here with a lot of experiance that can help you but you'll have to be specific. Good luck with what ever it is.
I am almost positive it has a bad head gasket (checking the compression this week....loosing water and putting out lots of steam, but no water in the oil and I cant find any leaks), it was running really rough before then, and it has 171k miles on it with no major internal work. I figure it is getting close to dying with how bad it is running and the high miles....I could be wrong though.

Re: L98 crapping out!!! (amswak)
how much am I looking at total for zz4? I dont even know what it is. where can I look at the specs on it?
Chevyperformanceparts I think . . . Do an internet search. I found several Chevy dealers that had them listed. One example was $3600 from greenwood chevy.
If I remember right you just take your intake and electronics and drop them in place of the carb intake.
lt1s are a fairly easy swap, ls1s aren't. first find out what's wrong with yours. also the L98 has plenty of potential & your not really going to gain anything too big doing a LT1, you can create the same power with a L98. just ask for advice on what you want to do exactly & we'll help you out :chevy
I don't blame you for not wanting the L98 anymore. I read in past posts that head gaskets had a tendency to leak and were one of the biggest complaints of the L98. Each side blew on mine about a month apart. The third and final time it leaked into the block. After 240k+ miles on my 1990, I decided for the new engine...ZZ4. Why rebuild if the gaskets are just gonna eventually blow. I've put 4500 miles on it so far and I'm real happy with it. The rest of the car is bone stock, except for the larger injectors, so I can't tell much of a difference in the horsepower. The mechanic told me that with the L98 manifold, I would only be seeing an additional 20 hp. Total cost with labor was $6200. Good luck
