Hi, I have a 94 Corvette, I Need some advise. The car runs good, but the previous owner said he had not done anything but gas and oil changes to the car since about 50,000 miles the car now has just over 100,000. I was going to start with a tune up. What plugs, wires are suggested.MSD, Taylor? Should I change anything else Dist. Cap. I'm not sure. Thanks Brian :confused:

 

Change whatever you think is appropriate as a usual tuneup. There are other considerations to ponder especially since it is around the 100k mark. I would replace the plugs (Bosch +4 or ACDelco) and wires (MSD 8.8mm are great or Moroso Blue Max or Taylor 8mm) - distributor cap, air filter, rotor, fuel filter, check wiring for corrosion at the posts, clean throttle body intake, check fluid levels in your AT or MT and/or differential unit and replace with good synthetic if possible. (Look at getting your tranny flushed and exmained for long term maintenance) Also make sure you are running good synthetic oil and good filter for engine. (Remember to fill up the filter and subtract that from the total engine oil input) (Mobil One, Amsoil , K&N, PureOne etc are good filters) Might want to check your bushings, check and lube zerk seals in front (4) and 2 in back (remove rear tires) - check linkages, grease and lube door frames, hinges, cables, hood release, trunk release mechanisms etc. Check steering for excessive play and get your tires balanced & aligned if desired. (on a Vette it doesn't take many potholes and/or bumps for this to happen) Check age of your springs and shocks. Look or wear and/or splitting of the monoleaf springs in front and rear. Check your brakes and the wear depth. It wouldn't hurt to bleed the brakes if desired and flush with new brake fluid for the whole system. Drain, flush and refill your radiator and make sure your aux fan/thermostat is working ok. Make sure your headlights are pointed ok and check for tightening up all misc bolts, and fasteners that you can find. Might want to also peek at the engine, remove valve covers, look at the wear there and the carbon buildup. Might recommend a timing chain replacement to save you down the road.

As you can see, I tend to go overkill on most of this, but you can pick and choose what you want to do. Search the archives here and you will find out how to do just about every single one of these without a problem. There is just so many ways you can tackle your open-ended question about "tune up"

First, definately the plugs. Wires rarely go bad (although most mechanics say otherwise....for the sale), so, if you are staying stock, your wires will probably be fine. If performance is what you want, you can upgrade to MSD 8.5mm's or equivalant. Also, if performance ignition is what your after, a new coil can be done also. I used the MSD Blaster coil. As for cap/ rotor....you have neither. Your vette uses an opti-spark distributor system. I would guess that with 100k, that might be worth replacing. I don't know the life of these, perhaps someone will chime in on that one. Good luck!!

Thanks, (way2fast) Well I have the winter to tackle this projects. That is some list. Maybe I can put them on my Chrismas list and give it to my wife. Fat chance there, Ha. I got married down yourway in Amite and had the reception at the Holiday Inn Select in Hammond. I'm down there every other year at Thanksgiving. Not this year though.
