Default Backup Lights Not Working

Hey guys 96 LT4 backup lights not working. Here is what I know. Fuse on interior fuse block left side of instrument panel is good. Back up light bulbs by license plate are good. No current getting to bulb sockets by license plate. 6 speed manual transmission. What is most likely cause? Where would you start?

Thanks for your help.

Pull the slave cyl. Pull the backup switch. Lube it up and press it by hand and see if they work. I was able to get mine to work for a few months but then it went back to inop. I vaguely remember an o2 socket or oil pressure sensor socket worked to remove it.

they are common fail points. New ones are available.

Just replaced the backup switch on my 88. Had to replace the pigtail also as it was deteriorated kind of a bugger to get to as a socket won't fit without hitting the transmission side. Used and open end and got it tight after finger tightening it .

RArline, when you put your switch back did you put some teflon paste on the threads? The shop manual says something about.

Thanks

His 88 has a different transmission than you do.

I vaguely remember an oring that sealed the switch to the trans
but I could be wrong. It’s so high up I don’t think it’sa big deal but a few wraps of Teflon tape can’t hurt.

Deepa thanks. What did you mean by pulling the slave cylinder? You mean the clutch slave cylinder? Do you have to remove for access to switch?

Thanks

Yes. I had to pull it to change the switch. I have headers and had a big y pipe back then so it might have made it harder. It’s been a while.

Hey guys I finally got back on getting this back up light switch fixed. I work slow. 1996 LT4 6 speed manual. So I confirmed it was the switch, ordered a new switch from Corvette Mods . Today I get the old one out and compare to the new one (see picture) and they are different. I checked my order to see if I ordered the right one and I believe I ordered the correct one. Not sure if they sent me the right one but maybe they did. If you look at the 2 switches the old switch has a 3/4" shaft whereas the new one has a 1/2 " shaft. So something is wrong. Could the wrong switch been in the car? Not sure if it means anything but I have had the car for 2 years and its always been a hard shift into reverse.

Anyway can anyone tell me what switch is the right switch?

Thanks

Dave

Switch that came out of car on left. New switch is on right (with teflon tape).

One on the left is correct.

Do NOT buy anything from Corvette Mods, they are the very worst Corvette vendor on the planet - do a search on this forum if you're not convinced.

The correct switch (it now has a pigtail, but the connector at the end of the pigtail is correct) is available from Zip Corvettes and Eckler's and maybe some others.

Thanks ram_g. I don't think there is any way the one I bought will work. Corvette Mods said it was for a 1988 to 1996 6 speed manual but not sure what its for. The electrical connector looked like the one that was on the car so I ordered that one. I'll go with one of the places you suggest and get the one with the pigtail.

I appreciate the help as I had no idea what the deal was.
