Default Headliner in Hardtop for C4

I had to replace material on the headliner in my hardtop. I tried a couple of ways to install the headliner back into place and neither worked (spray adhesive; Velcro).
What is the black bonding agent shown in the attached photo or do you know a better product to use?
Thanks, Mike

Maybe some dabs of hard setting RTV or Liquid nail? Is the material on a cardboard or fiber board or something

I would say a fiber board. Kind of heavy. When I tried Velcro it held for a while but then high temps softened the adhesive and it fell off.
Liquid nails might do it (I hope).
Thanks for reply.

I couldn't get the original material to go back on without being wrinkled.

I went to my local trimmer and he had some inexpensive headliner material with thin foam backing he used when trimming boats.

It was very close to the original in my 86 maybe a little nicer.

Because the foam made it stiffer it was easy to keep straight and I just glued it straight to the roof panel with no board (spray adhesive). Very easy job.

Not concourse correct but I am very happy with the result.

There is at least one poster here that will profusely disagree with you. He has a video just slapping the old 30 plus year damaged junk back in place with some adhesive. Looked perfect in his opinion. Doubt it could look better than yours

Headliner adhesive will work fine. You just need the two surfaces to be very clean

I pulled the old one out and dispensed with the original board.

Spent some time getting the old glue off (I ground an old wooden spoon down into a flat scraper so it wouldn't hurt the surface).

Masked the surround to keep the glue off the non mating surfaces. Then sprayed both surfaces with spray glue and stuck it straight to the panel.

Like all upholstery just start at one side and keeping a little stretch on it to keep wrinkles away and roll it onto the surface.

I then trimmed and left enough all around so I could poke a little into the gap at the edge for a good finish.

Having had saggy headliners in the past I wanted material that had a backing. The foam deteriorates with time and heat and loses adhesion, with the cloth backing it should last longer (I hope).

I have added a couple of photos of the material.
