Hey guys, I've been chasing down the source to my rather peculiar starting problems. Got a brand new battery, starter and alternator, and it still has the same intermittent problems, to where it won't start, maybe one in every ten days. But here's the weird thing: every time when it is acting up, I can hear the starter whirling away in the "accessories" position of the key. Then when I go to full crank the engine, nothing. And I can crank and crank and still nothing. But leave it sitting for ten mins and come back to it, starts right up, no problem. Wondering if its my ignition switch? Really weird symptoms with the starter trying to move in the accessories position, googling it has turned up nothing. Any help is greatly appreciated
I'm a bit confused, are you saying the starter cranks the engine and it just won't fire? I ask because if it has always turned the engine why did you replace the battery, starter and alternator?

I think, when it is acting up, that the the starter gear is not engaging with the flywheel. It sounds like its spinning freely. But the starter solenoid is just as new as the starter motor, as its one combined unit. And it's doing it when the key moves into the accessories position, which is obviously not when the car should be trying to start.
If the starter is engaging in the accessory position, the ignition switch or the wiring to the ignition switch is bad. The actual starting process is controlled by the CCM, which acts based on the signals from the ignition cylinder.
