I guess you could always search around thirdgen.org there are some pretty serious engine combos over there also. But you probably have already done that. :chevy
Jason has 363 RWHP 434 RWTQ since he did his last tweaks. If I remember correctly he was talking about switching cams again. I believe he has the Comp Cams 220/229 and was looking at their Extreme Energy 230/236 grind.

To be honest even though those are stout numbers that is kind of low compared to what I was expecting. I'm seeing 383s that are doing 379rwhp and over 400 ft/lb. Maybe that new cam will help him some more. Do you know what heads he has?
I would really think that a 396 would benefit tremendously from a different type of intake. A high cube motor like that will have an abundance (read: too much) low end torque. A miniram, stealth ram, or even a converted single-plane carb intake would seem like a better choice. There's a guy on thirdgen.org building a high cube stroker (383 or 396, I can't remember) with AFRs and a stealth ram. Judging by what a guy with a similar combo on a 350 was capable of (380rwhp through a 700R4), it would seem that the high cube motor would make in excess of 425-450rwhp.
Those are my numbers. I'm sick tired of people putting in their two cents about my HP numbers. I didn't build my car for maximum HP. I built it for stock like street manners and emissions compliance. My car does not stink at cold idle, idles very nice at 800, does not ping, does not smoke, I can lug it, I can move around a parking lot very slowly with ease and I can jump on it and scare myself and anybody with me. That was my goal with this car. My car is not a straight line only car and its definitely not the best car. If I put a bigger cam in its because I like tinkering. I know some people are going to think this is sour grapes but its honestly not. I am happy with my car. I could put in a huge cam, remove the cats and put bigger heads on and have closer to 400 rwhp. The 396 LT1/4's running my cam are around 390-400 rwhp in smog compliant trim. The difference between a 396 and a 383 is only 13 cubic inches. When I had 330 HP I felt it was low also but now I feel its where it should be. Then there is always the guy that says “With better tuning……..” when they don’t understand the first thing about tuning, not that I am an expert but I understand quite a bit.
Now after I wrote this, please accept my apologies. I know you did not mean anything bad about what you said. I like this Forum for learning, planning projects, helping others, getting help from others and having fun with our hobby. JD, you’re right, this is going to get interesting.
Whoa whoa whoa.... don't get pissed. I should of been more thorough in my post up there. If it is 363 across the entire RPM band and melts the tires from 800 to 6000 RPM, then that is a huge difference. I don't like "peak" #s either, I like a flat line across the range.
I like your attitude. You and Me have a few things in common for sure. While I have a free flow exhaust, I could easily pass smog. I like my car to go ANYWHERE, ANY TIME without bucking, carrying on, stalling, surging etc. It's not solely set up for 1/4 miling, it does ok in the corners and it's not soo bonejarringly stiff that it shakes your fillings. I think we all want our cake and the ability to eat it too. A purpose built drag car with no street manners really isn't that difficult to make. A street car with 400+ HP that runs like a 2002 Mercedes SL600 is a tough task to produce.
HPwise...you're in the $. For what you intend to use the car for that is more than enough and impressive to boot. Also considering no special fuels or that sort of tomfoolery are required. To me, you have a pretty impressive car, that with your numbers, SHOULD perform in the 11's and close to 117-118 mph(like I did). That is nothing to sneeze at.
I don't think anyone was knocking your HP numbers, they are respectable for your setup. Not sure why people have the misconception that a 396 should have lots more HP than a 383. They are both 350 blocks.
Also, you can have a 383 that makes 300 HP and a 383 that makes 500 HP, there are many pros and cons to each setup.
Jason,
I apologize if you thought I was disparaging your car or your HP numbers. On the contrary, I've always thought you had a great combination of performance, streetability, and good looks.
If anything, I would / do use you car as an good example of what a stroker should be.
As you probably recall, I still have some issues with mine. It is a work-in-progress. It is back at More getting tweaked (heads, gears, etc.).
My car will be setup for road and track events when I get it finished. I'm not concerned about it making the most HP/TQ numbers nor am I concerned about mild manners around town. I am concerned about it putting down a consistent power curve for prolonged periods of time (30-60 minutes) in a specific RPM range (2800-6000 rpms).
