Just finished getting rid of all the dash rattles. PIA. But what a difference!!! Like a new car. On to the doors. 1st problem is that the drivers door is begining to hit the striker. Time for a new hinge? I would rather not if I don't have to as it would mess up the paint. I would guess the door has dropped about 1/8 inch, just enough to rub on the top of the striker. Starting to see a bit of wear on the top of the striker. Is there a pin and bushing available? I am not sure about trying to install them without taking off the doors in which case I might as well put on new hinges. Any help would be appriciated.
Check the bushing. On a friends 84 the bushing had come out of place and was on the pin only. The hole in the hinge was way too big wihtout it and the door was hanging down quite a bit. I removed the hinge, put the bushing back in place, welded a small blob on the pin to keep the bushing in place and reinstalled the hinge. The door was like new.
If you only have minor wear there is an easy fix. Open the hood. Close the door. Now you have great access to the upper hinge. Loosen the hinge to frame bolts a bit. Adjust the hinge to remove the play in the pin are tighten the bolts again. You will still have play in the door if you lift it when open, but it will align to the striker when closing the door.
Thanks for the advice. The bushing is intact. If it were out I would imagine the door would drop a lot. I think I am dealing with about 1/8 inch drop, perhaps slightly more, at the striker. It's hard to measure, but I am certain it less than 1/4 inch. Is this normal for a 50k mile car? There is no history of accidents per car fax.
