There are proper ways of calibrating the instruments we use. I would talk to Wilcox Corvettes and see what they can do. They have a system for correcting the temperature gauge to make it accurate using a variable resistor.
I learned that my 1968 C3 came with a 18 gallon fuel tank according the sources. I also read that the original tanks were going to be made of plastic. I would have a hard time doing what you are trying as my fuel level sender is mounted on the bottom of the tank. The level sender is connected to the removable plate on the bottom of the tank. I just swapped to an EFI system and all I had to do was drop the new fuel level sensor and electric Fuel Pump with a fuel pressure regulator attached. In 20 minutes I had 58 psi at the engine. I just drained the tank and swapped plates and the wired the pump and fuel level sensor and I was done. No tank pulling and No Return Lines!
